Following the glorious victory of team India in the T20 World Cup 2024, all eyes are set on the selectors to appoint the new captain of the Indian cricket team. 

Rohit Sharma, the former captain, announced his retirement from the T20 internationals after winning the World Cup trophy. Alongside Rohit Sharma, some other prominent cricketers bid farewell to the T20 internationals. Legendary cricketers such as Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav hinted at their retirement, too. 

And that opens up a vacancy for the captaincy of the Indian T20 cricket team. Anticipation grew amongst the fans after all-rounder Hardik Pandya redeemed his performance in the 2024 World Cup. Yet the selectors emerged with a twist in the tale. 

 

Suryakumar Yadav: New India T20 Captain

The new Head coach of the Indian team: Gautam Gambhir along with the selectors and former captain Rohit Sharma has decided to pass on the baton to Suryakumar Yadav a.k.a. SKY for the Sri Lanka tour of India. 

It was highly anticipated that Hardik Pandya would be picked as the captain of this squad because Hardik held the position of the Vice Captain of the Indian T20 Squad. But the BCCI decided to give SKY another chance to lead this young and jubilant team. But that’s not all, here’s another shocker for you! 

 

Shubhman Gill: New India T20 Vice-captain 

You read that right! For the Sri Lanka tour later in July, the BCCI have bestowed their faith in Shubhman Gill. It is quite shocking for many fans because Shubhman Gill was not a part of the Indian T20 World Cup squad. 

Moreover, there were many other competitors who could have led the team such as Rishabh Pant, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Axar Patel or Jasprit Bumrah. However, the BCCI stands firm on its revolutionary decision to bring rapid growth to India's cricket landscape under Gautam Gambhir's guidance.
